Purple Swamphen  Porphyrio porphyrio ssp.

Purple Swamphens are involved in the local cagebird trade. At least twenty birds of the grey-headed poliocephalus-group were caged in mid-2004 in an aviary in Mushrif Park, Dubai; while as many as 25 full-grown birds were released in 1997 into mangroves on the island of Abu al-Abyadh, Abu Dhabi (Aspinall 2004). Some of the latter individuals survive but do not breed there, although others may have dispersed to, and be those now recorded in, more typical habitats in the UAE, as at Al Warsan Lakes [Wimpey Pits].
